Editing Classic Green Template??

I just want to know is it okay if I just edit the classic green template that I get with zencart version 1.3.9 without doing the good old "Create a new custom template" thing???
I reinstalled zencart just to see if anything changed and if my work was saved and it was!
Will my work be deleated if I upgrade zencart to the 1.5 version?

Creating your own custom template takes just a few minutes and is well worth the time. Remember that the template overrides control more than just the appearance of your site, and anything in the 'classic' folders might be overwritten when you upgrade.

So the classic contemporary green template will be changed as well when I install the new version? How about I just copy the files from classic contemporary green in my new template and edit them there? Is that too simple to work? :)

Um, in the hour and fourteen minutes since your original post, you could have created your custom template and been well on your way to getting your store the way you want it.

Unless there's some practical reason you don't want to use a custom template, I'm going to stick with my original suggestion.

Depending on how you upgrade to the next version (including the way I do it), the contents of the 'classic' folders may well be overwritten, eliminating your edits.

I am new at this as you can see, and I'm not quite sure you understood my question
in my includes/templates folder I have 2 folders automatically installed by zencart : "template_default" (with most of the zen cart files) and "classic" (which only has "CSS" and "images" folders). Can I create a custom template just by copying the content of the "classic" folder (that is "CSS" and "images") into my "CUSTOM" template folder and editing some of the files (i.e. header_bg.jpg, title_back.jpg) ? Or do I have more work than that?

Yes. Once you've created your custom template, you can copy the files from the 'classic' folders to the identical folder in your custom template and edit them from there. If you need to edit a particular file that isn't in the 'classic' folders, you can copy it from template_default.

I can't recall anyone ever mentioning this, but it would surely work... Find any folder called "classic" and change its name to whatever you want to call your new template. Any later upgrade will not overwrite your new template folders since only folders of the same name get overwritten, and you changed the name.

While it would work ... you then lose the ability to switch to the Classic Template to determine if errors are template related or not ... :unsure:
