Interacting with our Store and Inventory Management?

I am currently looking into using ZenCart for our shopping cart. We have our own developer and we want to develop our own store and inventory management system. I know that we are doing this somewhat backwards, people typically use ZenCart for both their shopping cart and store. My questions is, how does the ZenCart shopping cart interact with our store and inventory management system?

It would be a waste of your time and money to develop a storefront from scratch and then try to cripple Zen Cart to fit it into that. If you want a layout you don't think you can get with Zen Cart, think again - you're wrong. ZC can be styled to look like anything you can imagine, depending on your skill. Likewise, ZC already manages inventory; what unique inventory needs do you have that cannot be handled by the standard system? It will most likely be cheaper and easier to modify ZC if necessary than to start from scratch. You speak as if the cart, storefront and inventory management are separate systems, but they are simply different aspects of an integrated whole.
