USPS module shipping info is added, but not on invoice

Aaaarrrggghh!
(whew, this shipping thing is driving me buggy)
I've searched for this issue and not found anything.

The module seems to be working fine,
but the invoice shows no listing of the shipping cost separate from the total and no listing of the method chosen.
This info is not reported in the costumer/orders admin panel either!

The only real customization I've done is to remove the PayPal xpress button from the cart

I've offered a discount for the first month of the store.
The cart reports the items their price,
the total
the discount
then gives the total with the shipping magically added, not itemized.

Here's what it looks like:

Are you using the USPS module described here?

No, I'm using the stock one.
Do you think it's the module itself?
I didn't see a changelog for the the update, it seems to be primarily about the new rates?

My suspicion was that there is something funny with the way my cart is reporting the totals rather than the module itself.
The module seems to be working fine and sending a shipping total.

I hear you,
but it can hurt, it can!
hence the myriad of ".... doesn't work after upgrade"
posts on this forum.
(and, I tend to knock things over when fumbling around in the dark.)
I'm desperately hoping someone familiar with which particular widgets affect the reporting from the shipping module will see this and chime in.
It's giving me the results of the calculation but not the particulars.
why?
