Goodness..:shocking:
Seriously read through the links I posted.. I PROMISE that they really are going to get you through this.. Running the upgrade WILL upgrade your database (your primary concern based on your original post).. File upgrades are a MANUAL process..
So if you wanted to start over, you could UPGRADE by copying the v1.5 files to your site, copying over your configure.php files, copying your database, and then running the install so you can UPGRADE your database.. (and this is covered in ONE of those links I posted)
Since you don't meet the minimum install requirements for v1.5 you can ONLY upgrade to v1.3.9.
Im doing it now... i just upgraded the php to 5.2.1.7 which seems to be compatible with ZC1.3 and 1.5. I hosted the mysql server remotely to get around the mysql problem for the 2 different versions needing different mysql versions (i think?)
See what happens will post update for benefit of others..
I really wish this was like wordpress where you click "update" and all is done for you, on the other hand wordpress gets hacked all the time.
The biggest problem i have had, apart from worrying about security on 1.3.8a is that ZC created a load of dead links. I though this was just due to simple seo url mod but when turned off they were still there
The problem was that DELETED products were still linked to.. the links were showing up in the forward and back buttons when looking at products and also in the "whats new" showing at the bottom of a product listing.. for the various categories.
That was causing crawl errors with google bot which suddently went from about 200 404 errors to about 5,000 when i deleted the products... and that knocked my serps down about 5 places for my main keywords
So not knowing WTF was wrong my idea was just to rebuild the whole site.. but now i understand i cant just copy the customers accross so ill have to hope this works...:(
