SSL - does it have to be the same domain name?

Hi,

Currently I have a zen cart site with its own domain name, that domain has a SSL cert, and my credit card processing is integrated into the site.

So the main site is on:

http://www.MyShop.com

The shopping cart and admin is on:

https://www.MyShop.com

Now...

I want to open one and maybe two other zen cart stores.

Do I have to get SSl certs for each of the domains?

Or, can I have ONE SSL domain and share it? By this i mean, I would get an SSL cert for https://www.CompanyName.com, and have the carts or each of the zen cart stores directed to that domain.

e.g. in the configure.php files

  define('HTTP_SERVER', 'http://www.MyShop.com');
  define('HTTPS_SERVER', 'https://www.CompanyName.com');

Would this work with Zen Cart?
Is there any other implications that I need to think about e.g. will it still work with the PCI regulations?
Is there anything else that I should think of regarding this set up?

Thanks,

Paul

Probably yes. You can buy SSL certificates that will apply to multiple domains, but they're very expensive and I'd guess you'll discover it will be cheaper to just buy a cert for each domain.

Really I was trying to find out if:

(1) Would this work with Zen Cart?

(2) Is there any other implications that I need to think about e.g. will it still work with the PCI regulations?

(3) Is there anything else that I should think of regarding this set up?

I know that I can get several SSL certs, but they will cost for for each cert and each fixed ip. Also I can't have them on the one hosting accout (unless it's a reseller account) because each needs it's own ip address. I can of course get 2-3 hosting accounts, but again, it costs more money, as well as the inconvenience of having several hosts. I have used a number of them in the past, and am down to 2 right now.

Thanks,

Paul

Re: SSL - does it have to be the same domain name?

These are questions that you need to direct to your hosting company, as they are in the best position to advise you on how they have configured SSL settings on their server.

There are "wild-card" SSL certificates that can apply to several domains.

Bear in mind that the configuration of SSL is not something specific to Zencart. Zencart will obediently operate on any SSL structure that is correctly configured, as there are only two small edits to make in zencart to get it to follow SSL protocols (and those are the settings in the configure.php files).

If SSL is badly set up on the server, it is likely to affect any site trying to operate off that SSL... not just zencart.

Speak to your host about options and configurations they apply.
