Clean install 1.5 DB 1.39 upgrade question.

Hi,
I have read a number of the upgrade posts and a couple seem to counter-dict which is best so I need a sounding board for the best approach to this.
I am going to clean install 1.5 for most of my existing 1.39h sites then re-customize them. The reason being I had to modify many of those Zen-carts (1.39h) files to be able to run on the low version of PHP on my hosting company's servers. Oh happy day!, they finally upgraded. So a clean install will correct all the changes. It may be more work but who said life was easy. What would be the best way to handle the DB.
Create a clean DB with the install then try to upgrade the old DB to it?
Create a copy of the old DB and point the install to use it?
Which ever will work best with the new improvements and keeps its security.

Upgrade your files as described, applying updates to addons and bringing your customizations up to date.
Keep the database, upgrading it as per instructions.

Thank you for the reply and advice. I was not sure which way would handle the db better, creating new and the trying to import the data or upgrading the old database structure to the new.
