Page is not viewing correctly in Firefox zoomed and in corner

page is https://www.kwmagic.com - problems are only showing up when using Firefox

in upper left hand corner, from searching these forums - it is because pages was not edited in UTF-8 - but that is as far as I got as, I cannot find which page the , is on to delete it.

Also, when viewing on firefox, font size is zoomed on SOME computers.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, it sure woudl be appreciated.

I have tried using the firefox, developers tools - but unable to figure it out that way. also search in developer's toolkit.

Re: Page is not viewing correctly in Firefox zoomed and in corner

The challenge is that it could be in any of several files.

Best place to start is by looking at any files you edited. You'll want to re-edit each one and save it as UTF8-without-BOM, and then re-upload the newly-saved file.
Then test again after each one.

Then if it's still a problem, look at each of the files you added that weren't part of the original Zen Cart files, doing the same with each of those.

You can almost certainly limit it to just .php files, since your image files won't cause that, and your .css and .js files are handled differently.

WinMerge can be a handy tool to help identify changed or added files: http://www.zen-cart.com/wiki/index.php/Troubleshoot_-_Diagnosing_Obscure_Issues

Re: Page is not viewing correctly in Firefox zoomed and in corner

Appreciate the advice, I have done as instructed and been going through dozens of files - still can't find it.

I did get the firefox firebug installed and if I am using it correctly it seems to be in a script (if that makes sense).

The characters show up on every webpage, so I assume that the file that needs modifying is common to the layout.

I am continuing to search using winmerge, but I fear I will be weeks getting through all the files.

Is there any other way to search for the symbol, developers toolkit doesn't seem to find it?

The symbol and zooming problems are only showing up in Firefox

thanks

Phil

For giggles and grins, try searching for each character separately as none are in Zen Cart and nothing should come up unless it is related to your issue ...

Re: Page is not viewing correctly in Firefox zoomed and in corner

Hello Linda, thanks for the reply I did try that, and I just tried it again, just in case I missed it.

I am pretty sure it has something to do with a .php or .css file that was edited with the wrong font format, but for the life of me I can't find the file.

Re: Page is not viewing correctly in Firefox zoomed and in corner

One thing that might help is to look into the DOS Xcopy command and see how to copy files from one directory and all subdirectories into another directory based on date to find all files that might have been touched since around the time this appeared ...

It helped me find some weird things I had done when I could not locate the file that I goobered up ...

Re: Page is not viewing correctly in Firefox zoomed and in corner

Linda ... goobering up files?!? Say it isn't so!

But I was wondering, as I read this thread, why the OP is searching file by file. If they have a lcoal copy of their files there are many editors which will search multiple files in one swell foop. Or am I missing something obvious?

Re: Page is not viewing correctly in Firefox zoomed and in corner

I do have a copy on my machine, how would I search for just those characters in a file? - OR is it because one file is saved with the wrong character set that they do not show up in the developers tool kit?

Re: Page is not viewing correctly in Firefox zoomed and in corner

Those are BOM (Byte Order Mark) characters, and most editors will mask their existence. It's possible that the Developers Toolkit search may also not detect them.

I expected that might be why I cannot search for them, I had this problem once before - however is showed up in all the browsers and was easily fixed by removing the characters from the define-main-page file.

This time the problem is only in Firefox and also the layout seems zoomed and out of alignment - but only in firefox.

Re: Page is not viewing correctly in Firefox zoomed and in corner

The "zoom" and "alignment" thing is a result of the extra characters being displayed before any of the normal HTML. Same would happen if an error message were output at that point too. It's basically preventing the font settings of the CSS from firing. Don't get hung up about those symptoms. Fix the stray characters thing and the rest will take care of itself.

Re: Page is not viewing correctly in Firefox zoomed and in corner

30+ hours in to this problem, I am right back where I started...

the only thing I have figured out is if I remove the English.php file the characters go away, but obviously everything else is mucked! - so now I have to figure out what the english.php file accessing that is causing the hiccups?

ARRRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Page is not viewing correctly in Firefox zoomed and in corner

Okay. So, what exact path is this problematic english.php file located in?

Is it the original /includes/languages/english.php file?

Or is it your customized /includes/languages/your_template_name/english.php file?

What have you altered in this file, and why?

If it's the main/original Zen Cart-supplied /includes/languages/english.php file, then delete it and upload the one found in the master distribution zip of Zen Cart files.

And then put all your customizations into a separate customized override file at /includes/languages/your_template_name_here/english.php

Re: Page is not viewing correctly in Firefox zoomed and in corner

First off... thank-you for the support,

I can get the characters to go away if I delete the english.php file however....

I have not and never altered the English.php file, when did upload the one from the master distribution, the characters come back on Firefox, just as they were.

This leads me to believe that the english.php file is acessing another file that is causing the problem. - maybe - maybe not - I really don't know at this point.

Re: Page is not viewing correctly in Firefox zoomed and in corner

There are a few files loaded near the end of the english.php file. Take a look at those names for clues about files to check.

Re: Page is not viewing correctly in Firefox zoomed and in corner

Whew......

Got it... thanks everyone.

I started by making another english.php file, then deleting all of the file references at the bottom of the page, adding back each block of code and updating one at a time, until one stopped it from working.

Turned out to be Meta_tags (the last one), I could not find an error on the meta_tag.php page - perhaps because the characters are hidden, but I downloaded a copy from the 1.3.9h orignal and modified it to the appropriate information, uploaded and that did it. woo hoo! she works.

thanks again
