How to change header and footer width?

I have my main content width set to be 960px and I want that to remian as is. But I want to make the header and footer background stretch 100% of the window. How do I do that?

includes/templates/custom/common/tpl_main_page.php
move the header, and footer related codes outside

If you don't have that file in your custom/common folder, copy it from template_default/common

And then where do I put them. I tried putting all the code above the <div id="mainWrapper"> and it gave some bad results.
