Email errors from contact us page

Email Error: Could not instantiate mail function. Please check Admin->Configuration->Email Options->Email Transport.

Email Error: SMTP Error: Could not connect to SMTP host.

The top error comes with php as email transport, the other comes when set to SMTP.

Am in the process of getting photos of products ready to upload.
However, I tried the 'contact us' form, found the drop down emails was not working, sorted that OK, but am completely stumped with the Email errors....
can someone please advise me as to what I should do to put this to rights, as at the moment no-one can get through to us on the contact form.

Set up your Email Transport as SMTPAUTH.
And then fill in all the SMTP settings (on that same screen) using the same settings you have in your regular email program (ie: outlook or thunderbird or whatever) for "outgoing email".
