Sidebars are gone when I switch to my new custom template

Hello!

I just installed Zen Cart 1.5.
I'm using it locally until I get it all setup - I haven't uploaded it to my web site yet.
I bought the eBook "Zen Cart 1.5 Step by Step by David Ipswich" and have followed the first few instructions.
He advises to go through and copy/paste/rename a bunch of 'classic' folders with 'custom' folders.
After doing this, and changing my template from classic to the custom one I've created, I end up losing much of my layout.
The size bars are gone.
I've attached an image of what I end up with.
After this happened, I went back and started from scratch again, but still end up with the same result.
Any advice on how to fix this?

You need to enable the sideboxes you want to show on your template. Admin->Tools->Layout Boxes Controller.
