Should I upgrade to 1.5?

I am on version 1.3.9g. I read up a little bit on upgrading to 1.5 and since I'm not a programer, it seems like a major PITA. I have done upgrades in the past with no issues so I now I COULD do it.

But why? The site works fine as it is. It seems if I upgrade the site, none of the modules I've installed will work so I'll have to figure out what they are and reinstall them. This is my wife's site so I won't notice something is missing until she tells me and by that time, she losing money, time, etc. Her site is https://www.couponbeat.com.
Do I really need to upgrade? Are there major improvements that will make life easier for us? What's the down sides if I don't?

Any information that you can provide would be most helpful.

Thank you

Re: Should I upgrade to 1.5?

Far as I know, 1.3.9h is as secure as 1.5.0, and if I had a site that used a lot of mods which might not work with 1.5.0, I wouldn't upgrade until I knew the mods had been upgraded. Understand that just because the mod's description says it's for 1.3.9 doesn't mean it won't work with 1.5.0. The ones that don't work with the current version are mostly those with an admin component. There's a thread here somewhere that lists the mods that work.

That said, I tend to be a minimalist when it comes to Zencart mods, and I would suggest you take an inventory of your installed mods and ask yourself if you actually need all (or any) of them before making your decision.

BTW, you should at least upgrade to 1.3.9h.

Re: Should I upgrade to 1.5?

I would upgrade your current site to 1.3.9h, as stevesh says, immediately.

Then I'd make a sub-folder on the server and install 1.5.0 there and start to play with it in your spare time. Keep notes as you go. Install any mods you really want/need, play with the template, etc. If all goes well, you can then decide whether to upgrade your working site to 1.5.0. Make sure you understand what the new security requirements in 1.5.0 will mean to you before taking that step.

I haven't upgraded one of my stores to 1.5 as yet as I am running just such a heavily modded 1.3.9h install. Sure, many of my additions are now available for 1.5 - BUT there are still a number of incompatible mods which I frequently use. So I'll be waiting for a while until either new and upgraded mods become available OR until I find the time to re-write some of them. But that's just me.

If your site is not heavily customized then by all means DO upgrade your 1.3.9g to 1.3.9h as soon as possible (this is easy) and then take the plunge into 1.5.

BTW (and totally off topic): I am back after months of absence, had to deal with several personal issues all at the same time including the loss of a loved one amidst the sale, purchase and renovation of property ... but life goes on!

Cheers / Frank

... and the unique symptoms are already discussed in another thread.

No need to re-hash it all again here.
