Updating Order Status by 3rd party software

Hi,
I understand the two database inserts, I'm just looking at the best way to trigger the email if required.
What would be the recommended procedure....just duplicate the entire relevant section from admin/orders.php?

That's probably the simplest, given the current architecture.
