Category deleted by mistake

I have just been told that a category is missing. It is missing from the Catalog > Products/Categories list. Most likely someone hit the wrong button and deleted it. Does that mean it is irretrievable or is there some way to recover it?

I think it has only just happened but not sure what to do. I have taken a quick look at MySQL backups but don't see anything for a particular category. I presume the whole backup has to be installed?

thanks

Unfortunately there isn't an undelete button or back arrow so you'd have to go to a backup. Maybe take it as a sign that there are too many people with admin priveledges...
And are you sure it's gone completely and not just deactivated?

Re: Category deleted by mistake

you can ask your host to restore your website ,as many hosts have auto online dayly or weekly backup service.

focus on the open source for online shoping website.

Re: Category deleted by mistake

Thank you for the replies.

That's what I thought.
When I look through tuesdays backups I can see individual tables such as categories, categories_description etc. Should I be selective in what I restore or just go for the whole lot? You may have guessed I am not a DBA.

When I look through the /cache files I find three types of file;
myDEBUG-adm which, I assume, reports errors
sess_longname.htm this is 128bytes but 0 when opened.
zc_longname.sql there are two of these. The first is very long and looks like it refers to everything in the sql tables. The second refers only to the categories. Not sure if I need to glean any information from this.

Maybe take it as a sign that there are too many people with admin priveledges... Myself and the owner is all. The owner was making price changes and noticed a category was missing. Not sure when.

And are you sure it's gone completely and not just deactivated? If it was deactivated would it still show in the list? I don't see it anywhere.

How can I view the Admin Activity Log?

thanks for you help.

Re: Category deleted by mistake

If it is just deactivated then it should still be on your list of categories, just with a red dot instead of a green. If it's not there then it was deleted.
There is no magic button to read the admin activity log, you have to go in through phpmyadmin to read the table and find your culprit.

For restoration - I do not know what all gets deleted when someone deletes a category, so I don't know what the minimal way is to get it back is. Hopefully one of the zen masters will jump in here with some step-by-step instructions for you.
