Links just randomly appeared on home page?

I was styling my sidebox navigation and suddenly noticed just under my banner that the category links were placed there too (funny, geek, I love...). I don't know how I managed to do that and iv'e been trying to undo it but to no avail.

What caused them to appear, how do I fix it?

They are product subcategories.

Okay..
They belong only in the navigation sidebox.
How can I stop them displaying in the main box?

nobody knows how to remove subcategory links from the page?

Still trying to fix it :( been consuming alot of time lol

They belong only in the navigation sidebox.

Ive been through all that. Turned EVERYTHING on and off to see what it does and nothing to effect those subcategory links.

It's off, always has been off.

I just turned that on and it puts a subcategory bar ABOVE my banner, the links below also remain.

Ok then try....
admin->Configuration->Layout settings->Categories - Always Show on Main Page

Ok, that DID get rid of the links however...

It removed my product images too
and, it collapsed my navigation submenu (which I want open on page load)

What do you suggest?

Or you could just use them as they were intended. They're subcategories. So, edit those subcategory names and, in the same screen where the name can be entered/edited, add an image to them so as to make them into navigation points that customers will be encouraged to click on to see more about the products therein.

Thank you so much been 2 days trying to fix this!
I use chrome dev tool kit and still can't always figure out the CSS rule to apply.
