Animated .gif vs. jQuery

I have a flash slideshow on my main page, and I need to update it and get rid of the flash. I need a scrolling slideshow, so I made a test animated .gif, inserted it and it seems to work okay on different browsers on my mac/pc/ipad/iphone, but am I making a mistake? Should I build this slideshow in jQuery?

I would like it to be a smooth scrolling slideshow, like a ticker tape, with no starts and stops, and I can't accomplish that with an animated .gif. in a perfect world it would smoothly roll from one picture to the next and that is going to have to be built in jQuery, but jQuery looks so complicated, I don't know if I will be able to build it.

I looked through mods, I'm not finding any smooth scrolling mods, the ones I'm seeing are also starting and stopping between pictures. Am I missing one that would accomplish this?

Can someone give me thoughts on this. I'm on the fence with that animated .gif. I know what I need to do, I need to build this in jQuery, but egads it looks complicated! :yuck:

I inserted a slideshow on my site, just to see how the animated .gif would work, this isn't what I'll be using, this was just old graphics I had in a file, but I needed to test it. You can view it at bigredworkweardotcom.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Re: Animated .gif vs. jQuery

I'd be tempted to try this (as much as I don't like slideshows  ):

http://www.zen-cart.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=1404

It uses the banner manager to manage the images and you can specify the speed of the slide movement and the pause time of each image in admin. See it here, with Animation Speed of 500 and Pause Time of 1000.
