Please help - Erased my custom css stylesheet.

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping that this stupid mistake I have done can be reversed somehow. I have spent all week customizing the stylesheet.css page, almost finished it totally. Just hours and hours of work. Then I stupidly saved stylesheet.css from the default folder to my custom folder, as I had added some code there for an automatic slider. I just didn't think, when refreshed my page, the original css page came up, with all the customizing gone. I feel sick. I didn't back it up. (I know to do this now) I wish I had. Is there anything I can do or do I have to start all over again?

I wish I had better news ... but you're going to have to start over on the stylesheet.

If you are lucky your host may have a backup. otherwise step back take a deep breath maybe do some crying  and yelling . Then make some strong coffee and start over again

Re: Please help - Erased my custom css stylesheet.

I am literally in tears. I just don't know how I'm going to start all this over again right after I literally had finished it. why oh why didn't I back it up?

Anyway thanks for replying so quickly.

Does anyone think my host might have an old copy of the customized stylesheet.css or is it just totally saved over?

That's a question you'll have to ask your host

Re: Please help - Erased my custom css stylesheet.

It depends on how often your hosting service does backups. You'd have to ask them. You might still have to redo some of the customization depending on when the backup was done. Ask your hosting service if they have a backup from the previous day (in other words, if you overwrote the css on Tuesday, ask if there's a backup from Monday).

I find the easiest way to keep a backup is to download everything to your PC. You don't have to be able to run it, but you can do your edits there and upload them to the site. This way, if you make a boo-boo on your PC, the original file is still available on your site and you can just download it again.

Is the site currently online? Is there a cached version of your new sheet within Google, or was it never hosted online?

Re: Please help - Erased my custom css stylesheet.

I have a version of the website I did without zencart at https://www.thecraftcastle.co.uk and I have hosted the new zen cart version at https://www.thecraftcastle.co.uk/catalog. (this was only temporary until I finished the zen cart version of it, and then I was planning to upload it to the regular website address)

Do you think there's a way to find that in google, when it has the catalog extension to it?

Re: Please help - Erased my custom css stylesheet.

Find your site in Google, hover over the >> next to the listing, and a cached preview should pop up. See if its the one with your new stylesheet on it. If it is, open the cached copy, and see if you can extract the style sheet (you could do this in Google Chrome)

Re: Please help - Erased my custom css stylesheet.

Is there any chance you are using Mac OS X v7 or v8 (Lion or Mountain Lion?) If so you can find all recent versions of your stylesheet in the Time Machine backups which are automatically created while you work -- if you were working on it on your local machine.

Re: Please help - Erased my custom css stylesheet.

thanks. I've tried it but it's only showing the craftcastle.co.uk version, not the new Zen Cart craftcastle.co.uk/catalog version. Sigh. Going to have to call up the host company now.

Hopefully they have a backup.

Thanks for all the quick replies everyone.

Re: Please help - Erased my custom css stylesheet.

well the host was able to restore it from 3 days ago, so at least it's not totally lost. That's a relief. But they did charge me £15 to get it back, can you believe?

But at least I won't have to start over from scratch.

Thanks again for the helpful replies everyone.
