Inventory in stock question: attributes?

I have set up some products and found where you can add amount in stock when you add the item. My question, is there a way to track the amount in the attributes section. I am creating a site for fishing baits, I might have 30 of a lure in stock but offer five colors. How do I get the amount in stock to follow each color independently and not the total stock. Can this be done, I want the out of stock to show up for each color not when all 30 are gone. thanks in advance.
