Providing you do not have other shipping modules display when you have a cart that is Free Shipping ...
Using your templates and overrides, you could customize the file:
/includes/templates/your_templates_dir/templates/tpl_shopping_cart_default.php
and add the code in RED:
<?php
if ($shipping_weight == 0) {
echo '<div>Free Shipping! ' . '<br></div>';
}
if (SHOW_SHIPPING_ESTIMATOR_BUTTON == '2' && $shipping_weight > 0) {
Now the Shipping Estimator will not show when you have set the Shipping Estimator to display on the shopping cart (set to 2) ...
NOTE: if you were trying to hide the button for the Shipping Estimator when set to 1, you would do a similar change to the code higher up in the code where it refers to:
if (SHOW_SHIPPING_ESTIMATOR_BUTTON == '1') {
