moving my store to another directory on my hosting account

Hello:
I am trying to move my zen-cart store to another directory (/shop) on my hosting account. Read wiki instructions.

I have changed includes/configure.php to show new DIR_FS_SQL_CACHE.
I also tried to run fix_cache_key, and got a blank page.

The old path as it is shown in existing DIR_FS_SQL_CACHE is: mywebsitename/cache.
I changed it to: mywebsitename/shop/cache.

So, would it be possible to tell what am I doing wrong and what should I do?
And to run fix_cache_key.php I typed www.mywebsitename/shop/fix_cache_key.php - is it correct (got a blank page)?
Thank you.

Re: moving my store to another directory on my hosting account

You need to change ALL the paths that pointed to the OLD location so they point to the NEW location.
DIR_FS_SQL_CACHE is only ONE of several paths.

If your old foldername was "fred", then a simple search for "fred" would show you the places you need to edit.

Re: moving my store to another directory on my hosting account

I changed all i could fine in 2 config files to "mywebsitename/shop", still no luck.
should I change also define('HTTP_SERVER',.... from "www.mywebsitename.com" to "www.mywebsitename.com/shop" ?

May be I should upload zen-install folder to a new "/shop" folder?

No HTTP_SERVER and HTTPS_SERVER should be to your main domain the folder is in other places

Re: moving my store to another directory on my hosting account

Your first post said you wanted to "move to another directory", not "move it into a directory instead of leaving it in the root".
But your last posts suggest you're really trying to move it from the root.

Why do you want to do that? You'll get much better SEO benefit by having your store in the root.
Most people who ask about moving their store into a subfolder (instead of merely renaming from one subfolder to another, such as from /fred/ to /mary/) are really simply thinking they need to do that because they want to add some sort of splash page to their site because they think they need one based on reading somebody's blog that suggested they do that. And most of the time that's poor advice.

So, as with many situations, it would be more helpful if you were to explain the business problem you're trying to solve by doing this "move". What's been going on that led you to think you needed to move your store into a subdirectory? What exactly do you expect as a benefit by doing that, and why do you feel that is important?

Re: moving my store to another directory on my hosting account

I want to have my website made in html, and than have a button linked to the zen cart store.
I know that zen cart can be the whole website, with or without the store, but I just want to have my existing html site to be the main one.
Sorry, the thread title is inaccurate. I do want to move the zen cart to a subfolder in my domain folder.

I have tried to install and delete today few times following zen-cart.com instructions for installation and moving, with little success. Will keep trying after some break.

Re: moving my store to another directory on my hosting account

Simplest way:

  1. Install a NEW copy of Zen Cart (with a completely different (but temporary) database), in the new folder
  2. Preserve the 2 configure.php files (remember, their contents are different despite the filenames being the same)
  3. Move your store files over, and put the new configure.php files back in.

Re: moving my store to another directory on my hosting account

Dr Byte:
I did the first 2 items, only in slightly different way (but will do exactly as you said tomorrow):

  1. installed new zen cart in mydomainname/shop folder.
  2. on my computer, changed the names of existing configure.php to obsolete_configure.php.
  3. uploaded from my computer ALL my files from old zen cart to this new folder (or should only customtemplate folders be uploaded?)

After all that, still, when I went to the store, it was zen cart template layout. (or should I go to admin and change template to my custom one first?)

What should I do next with this new temporary database?
Should I get back somehow to my old database?
Thank you.

Re: moving my store to another directory on my hosting account

Oh, I guess putting the DB_XXXXXX settings in from the old folder's configure.php files would be a good idea

Re: moving my store to another directory on my hosting account

configure.php is needed - this needs to point to the new directory.

If you have an example of a working zen cart from before, look at the configure.php file for that and you should be able to figure out the changes to make it work for the new : be sure you have the backslashes retained or left out as one omission could throw the whole thing out
