Tax only one state?

I'm setting up our shopping cart and the clients want to only charge taxes within NEVADA, and to have it so that anyone who orders from out of state pays no sales tax.

Is there a way to do that? I have Nevada tax rates set up on the cart right now, but because it's set up as a tax zone, it automatically charges EVERYONE the Nevada sales tax rate - regardless of whether they order from Nevada, Virginia or anywhere else.

Is there a way to set Zencart so that it will auto-detect any order made from Nevada, and charge them the appropriate tax rate? And if they're from another state, have it NOT charge them?

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Tax only one state?

Ajeh:

On the Zone Definition for Nevada, what do you have in the DETAILS?

In details:

Country: US
Zone: Nevada
Action: (blank)

When I tried filling in different 'zones' for Nevada to give different tax rates per county, it wound up charging each buyer compounded taxes for ALL the different counties at once...

I'm sure it's something simple I've overlooked. Any advice?

How many Zone Definitions do you have that have a Tax Rate set on them?

So far just one - Nevada. Is that the problem? Do I have to set up a zone for each state with a rate of 'zero', or it will default to Nevada?

Re: Tax only one state?

No ... I asked so that I could make sure that you do not have other Zone Definitions setup that are being used to tax others ...

If you just have the 1 Zone Definition setup for a Tax Rate and that Zone Definition has its DETAILS setup correctly for:
Country: United States
Zone: Nevada

then there should not be an issue of charging tax to the wrong Zones ...

Could you look on your Zen Cart Admin at the Configuration ... My Store ... and see what your Tax is based on for the:

Basis of Product Tax
On what basis is Product Tax calculated. Options are
Shipping - Based on customers Shipping Address
Billing Based on customers Billing address
Store - Based on Store address if Billing/Shipping Zone equals Store zone

Shipping
Billing
Store

Re: Tax only one state?

Basis of product tax is set to 'shipping' (customer's shipping address).

Re: Tax only one state?

If you go to the Locations / Taxes ... Tax Rates ... what do you see?

Assuming you see Nevada ... if you click EDIT ... what do you see?

Re: Tax only one state?

If you go to the Locations / Taxes ... Tax Rates ... what do you see?

It shows only 1 rate.
Priority 1 / Tax Class = Taxable goods / Zone = Nevada / Tax Rate = 6% / Description = Nevada Sales tax

Assuming you see Nevada ... if you click EDIT ... what do you see?

Clicking Edit shows all that info (shown above) as editable drop down menus and fillable fields.

Tried several different states, still shows Nev. sales tax added in the shopping cart price no matter which state I say I'm from...

Re: Tax only one state?

Makes no sense ...

Go to phpMyAdmin and look at your database table:
tax_rates

what do you see in there when you browse it?

Look at the table:
zones_to_geo_zones

what do you see in there when you browse it?

Look at the table:
geo_zones

what do you see in there when you browse it?

For giggles and grins ... if you look at your two files, on the server, for:
/includes/configure.php

/your_secret_admin/includes/configure.php

are they both using the same database information?

Re: Tax only one state?

You should be able to get to it via your Control Panel for your domain ... if not, contact your hosting provider and ask them how to access this ...

Re: Tax only one state?

You have bad data ...

Backup your data base and run the SQL:

TRUNCATE zones_to_geo_zones;
TRUNCATE tax_rates;
TRUNCATE geo_zones;

Now ... start fresh and make 1 Zone Definition for Nevada Tax and in the DETAILS do the:
Country: United States
Zones: Nevada

and in the Tax Rate set that up to your taxes for Nevada ...
