Completely LOST on how to upgrade

Anyone a Guru who can lend some assistance?
Just got thrown into this project and need to get some clarification before the 12th of December on how to make this work. The store is currently using version 1.3.9 and yes the first thing is "NEED TO UPGRADE"

I did do a backup on the database. But when I go to our SERVER, I see no ZENCART files there. I also am completely lost on how to move forward.

If someone can point me in a direction that isn't as confusing as what I have read on the FAQ's that would be so helpful. Already have 5 hours in and now probably more confused than I was before.

I am happy to PAY for some assistance if that would interest anyone.
Greatly appreciate any and all help.
Thank you,
James

Re: Completely LOST on how to upgrade

One would download the ZenCart zip and expand it on your PC
Use FTP and create a folder under public_html or htdocs or??
FTP all expanded files to the folder and run zc_install supplying the new database information

Then using phpmyadmin, import the DB backup into the new DB
re-run zc_install selecting database upgrade only

Transfer copies of template files and any plugins(latest versions) to their proper locations

Test, test, test

When satisfied, move all files to their final location and edit the 2 configure.php files to reflect the move

Re: Completely LOST on how to upgrade

Thanks for the response,

So I am operating on a MAC.

I did download the new version to my server at 1&1. I see that it is in a folder.
When I try and run the install, it doesn't seen or want to do anything. So obviously I am missing something.
I also have a backup of my old DB from MYPHPAdmin from the server. Just a bit lost on how to implement, and not really getting the "DEMO" that the threads are telling me to read and work with first.

I feel like I have sort of been thrown overboard in a violent sea.

Re: Completely LOST on how to upgrade

Does your first post mean that you have a working 1.3.9h installation ? If so, I would leave it at that secure version for the time being while you learn a little more about Zencart.

When you say 'it doesn't seem to want to do anything', what exactly does that mean ? Are you seeing the beginning installation page ?

Re: Completely LOST on how to upgrade

Okay so this is the Story.
I have been engaged to fix a website that has ZENCART but isn't allowing for anyone to use it, as the shipping info for the STORE at Checkout seems to be incorrect according to the PopUp from PayPal that is being used for transactions. This must be what is causing the program not to allow for customer satisfaction.
I was told that there are other issues with the version1.3.9 and that I should upgrade.
I went ahead and did a backup of the existing MYSQL Database that is on the current server.
I have downloaded the file for the New Version of ZENCART to the server, It is in a folder under the Public_html directory, but the INSTALL folder doesn't seem that it has installed anything. So not quite sure how to get to the next level.
This whole thing is happening because the current website using zencart has had it on the site for 3.5 years with no access to it for the customer, as it doesn't allow for transactions to complete. It allows for customers to add all their info, but when they try and checkout it doesn't work.
Hence the desire to UPGRADE to be able to get to the bottom of what is causing this issue.

Re: Completely LOST on how to upgrade

So now I have another 5 hours invested, and still getting nowhere.
I guess the issue is with the current version, and it not being fully set up, as one can't finish the transaction at checkout.
Can anyone look and tell me what the issue is that needs to be corrected, then when I have more time, (as if any of us really do) I will move to upgrade to the newer version after I have a better understanding of ZENCART.
This is a link to the store: but as you will see when you try and checkout you will get an error message.

Re: Completely LOST on how to upgrade

I can get to the Paypal page, but I don't need any apples at the moment so I can't go further. **Exactly what error message are you getting when you try to pay ?

Re: Completely LOST on how to upgrade

The error that is in the attchment above.
We have changed the shipping address on both the Store and the customer,
and It still doesn't solve the issue of not being able to complete the transaction.
Have been on the phone with Paypal, and they have no resolve. This has been so frustrating, I know it is something that is completely overlooked and is just ridiculous.
Thanks for the help,
James

Re: Completely LOST on how to upgrade

Upgrading is not really going to help with debugging this issue. As stevesh said, v1.3.9 is secure and you don't need to upgrade immediately. What version of 1.3.9 is it? There are various functional bugs in earlier versions, so you should take it to v1.3.9h if necessary.
Work on isolating the issue, and post here with exact symptoms and other detailed information. We may be able to figure out what is happening (it will be easier if we can see the site).
OK, missed the last few posts while the tab was sitting there:)

Re: Completely LOST on how to upgrade

Is your store using PayPal Express Checkout? or is it set to use the less desirable PayPal Website Payments Standard? See Admin->Modules->Payment

For the module that you're using, what are all the settings set to?

Is this field filled? Obviously you shouldn't post its exact content.

Re: Completely LOST on how to upgrade

  1. Based on what you posted, you're using the PayPal Website Payments Standard/IPN module, which is the older technology, instead of the more contemporary Express Checkout approach.

  2. You'll get a more reliable experience if you do set up a PDT and enter it into that field. This helps mitigate against the limitations of the older technology used by PayPal Standard/IPN.

  3. The error message you quoted is caused by your settings for these configuration options:> Address Override

If set to 1, the customer shipping address selected in Zen Cart will override the customer PayPal-stored address book. The customer will see their address from Zen Cart, but will NOT be able to edit it at PayPal.
(An invalid address will be treated by PayPal as not-supplied, or override=0)
0=No Override
1=ZC address overrides PayPal address choices

Shipping Address Requirements?
The buyers shipping address. If set to 0 your customer will be prompted to include a shipping address. If set to 1 your customer will not be asked for a shipping address. If set to 2 your customer will be required to provide a shipping address.
0=Prompt
1=Not Asked
2=Required

**NOTE: If you allow your customers to enter their own shipping address, then MAKE SURE you PERSONALLY manually verify the PayPal confirmation details to verify the proper address when filling orders. When using PayPal Payments Standard (IPN), Zen Cart does not know if they choose an alternate shipping address at PayPal vs the one entered when placing an order.**Try changing the 2 to 0, and if that doesn't solve it, change the 1 to 0. You will then have to be VERY CAREFUL in ALL YOUR ORDER FULFILLMENT to make sure you contact the customer to ASK THEM FOR THE CORRECT SHIPPING ADDRESS since your settings will allow them to choose a different address in PayPal vs the one they put in your Zen Cart store.

Re: Completely LOST on how to upgrade

Thanks for the information.

So if the module that I am using is "OLD". What is the process of installing the NEW CHECKOUT version. I guess what I need to know is what are the parameters that I need to put into the payment module to make this work?

You insight is so very much appreciated
I actually can see light in the far distance of this long dark tunnel.
Cheers,
James

Re: Completely LOST on how to upgrade

You haven't indicated whether this is happening on ALL purchases, nor when the problem started. So it's hard to suggest any short-term solutions.

Long term solutions, especially those involving software-upgrades, should be planned and staged in a separate store on your website, for testing and quality control before actually implementing "live". That's why the upgrade documentation talks about using a temporary copy of your site as a staging area.

A staging area, even a copy of the same version of your live site, is always a good idea for testing changes you'd like to make ..... such as switching from PayPal Standard to PayPal Express Checkout.

Which exact version of Zen Cart are you using? (Login to your admin, click the "Version" link in the upper right part of your admin menu bar)

Switching from PayPal Standard to PayPal Express Checkout is as simple as:
a) make a copy of all your PayPal Standard settings (you've pasted them here already, so that's probably sufficient)
b) uninstall the PayPal Standard module by clicking "Remove" instead of "Edit" for that module's settings.
c) click Install on the Express Checkout module, and configure it as per: https://www.zen-cart.com/getpaypal .... you might want to do the API credentials part of those steps before you do steps ( b) and ( c), just so you don't have any downtime in your store while you're doing that setup.
