Are there variables available to diff between Category and Sub-cat pages?

Are there any variables available that can determine which page the user is on. right now, the main-content area on those 2 pages are too much the same i need to modify some elements depending on which page the user is on.

I believe that 'Body_id' and 'Current_page_base is index' wouldn't work because those vars get shared across many pages and im just trying to affect the sub-cat pages.

What is the exact issue you are trying to solve

There's no way to make a blanket distinction between top category and subcategory pages. You can make per-category stylesheets which affect only the category named; perhaps making a rule in the main stylesheet affecting all categories, and per-category stylesheets for the less numerous variety (probably top cats), would do what you want. As kobra says, details of what you want will let us give the best advice.

for one i'm trying to turn off the category image on the sub-category pages. if i turn off in the 'layout settings'
i think it is 'Categories - always show main page', then basically i don't have home page, since the home page is display
of all cat. images w/ links.

there were some other design issues i have to adhere to, like they want to see the sub cat name as a header on the sub cat pages.

here are the links - maybe obvious. the home page obviously needs the cat. images,
