Downloads not happening at checkout and shipping error message

Hi,
I am using v1.3.9h

I have several problems going on with downloadable products.
My downloadable file is green.
However, it does not show up after the purchase is made (this is a free product).
Also, the checkout process does not skip the address information (shouldn't it do this automatically for free items?)
And, I get a message that says "sorry we are not accepting payments from your region" (my zones are "none")

Please let me know if you need any other information.

Sounds like you've got the shipping, etc, settings incorrect on the product.

I read through the product set-up and it seems that I have done as directed. I do have the green dot.

The green dot is only part of the equation.

If it's asking for shipping, then you've not set it to use "Normal shipping rules apply".
A downloadable product is a SPECIAL KIND of virtual product, and you should NOT mark it as Virtual, nor mark it as "free shipping". Leave those settings at their normal defaults, because the download-file-attribute automatically bypasses those unless you meddle with them (changing them tells it to not do what it thinks it should normally do with a download item).

When your customer actually buys the product, if they get through checkout, does the attribute value show up on the order the same as it does in the shopping basket?
If not, then you've got something very odd on your site that is conflicting with the normal way orders and attributes are handled.

Next screen is 1 of 3 Shipping (Shipping Address verification)

Next screen is 2 of 3 Payment Information (Sorry, we are not accepting payments from your region at this time)

Next screen is 3 of 3 Order Confirmation (It shows Formats included with purchase - - -)

Confirm Order has no link for download. Going to the My Account page does not either.

I am stumped - - -

How did you get past step 2 of 3 if it didn't give payment options?
What payment modules have you got enabled?

Don't know - that is another puzzling thing. I just clicked on continue and it went to the next screen. :dontgetit

I have another free item that is working just fine. I am really puzzled.

When you go to the Products that are Downloads, you have the following set, correct?
Product is Virtual: No, Shipping Address Required

Always Free Shipping: No, Normal Shipping Rules

and Product Weight is set to 0, correct?

When you go to the Attributes Controller for this Product, you see a green dot on each Attribute next to the filename, correct?

If you look at your .htaccess files in:
/download
/pub

you see all of these extensions:

listed in the two locations of the .htaccess files, correct?

You mentioned that you see the Shipping (checkout_shipping) when you add a Download Product to the Cart, is that correct?

Did you add other Shippable Products to the cart as well as the Download Product? If so, what happens if ONLY the Download Product is in the Cart? Do you still see the Shipping (checkout_shipping) page?

Could you post the filenames of the Downloads that are not working correctly?

After 20 hours of searching, I noticed that I had two attributes set up. One was named "text" with the value assigned. The other was the correct value name with no value assigned. For future reference, is there a specific order we should follow when entering a new downloadable product?

I am still getting the error message "Sorry, we are not accepting payments from your region at this time . . ."; however, it lets me check out. Is there somewhere else to check for shipping information to set zones besides in Admin/Modules/Payment and Shipping?

Well, I just read another thread that suggested turning on the ZenCart Free Charge. That seemed to fix the problem. I was under the impression that if it was a downloadable item, it would always default to free shipping so I would not need this activated. I am a person who needs to understand the "why" :dontgetit before it sinks in so I won't do it again. Would you mind trying to help this little brain understand?

The Zen Cart Free Charger freecharger is designed for orders that are both No Charge for the Product and No shipping charge ... as in, the completed order is $0.00 ...

Without this Payment module installed, it is not possible to checkout with an Order that is $0.00 ...

While this is currently called the:
Zen Cart Free Charger

by default, you can call this anything you like using your templates and overrides on this Payment Module ...
