cart really slow

Hopefully someone can help.

My zen cart is really slow, the homepage is not that slow at loading however clicking any products on the homepage then takes forever to load the product page.

Seems a little on the slow side to me too but not majorly slow... switch on your parse times indicator:

admin/configuration/logging

Before you start to upload all your products, I would recommend Image Handler for your pictures. At the moment you're not optimising your images to load quickly for the web. You're using large images to display small thmubnails. Really not a good idea!

Your website is really slow though.... even without seeing your parse times I'd wager that your hosting company are not really a Zen Cart optimised host? Who are you hosting with GoDaddy or something?

For one, get a better host than Godaddy:)

Large image files for thumbnails can have a major effect (I haven't looked at your site yet).

what size pictures do you recommend? what host would be best?

#1. Go to a Zen Cart approved/optimised hosting company. If you PM me I will recommend one to you. They used to be listed in the accredited hosting companies area, above, but the best ones don't seem to be there any longer.... don't know why but I can give you the name of a really good hosting company.

#2. Install the Image Handler mod to take care of your image re-sizing.

#3. If you need thumbnail images then re-size them before uploading them. Otherwise, you're loading large images just to show thumbnails

Main thing is to get a better hosting provider though. GoDaddy are the worst in the world!

In the UK, there is no better host for Zencart (and eComerce in general). The founder of the company (now sadly deceased) played a significant role in the development of OsCommerce, and later was a very active member of this forum. They know eCommerce, and they are extremely well-priced. Maybe a pound a month more than the "popular" hosts, but a vastly superior service...

There are a few others who are very good too, and some of them are regular posters of help and advice on this forum.

Interesting. I had a look at them and would consider changing as they're actually cheaper than we're paying at the moment for what looks like a better server. I take it you use these guys? Do you use the multi-site option? Are the parse times and load times good? What's their customer support like, is it 24/7?

We host all 200 sites (via various individual client hosting accounts) with terranetworks. Never had a problem in all the years we've been with them. Their servers are amongst the fastest in the UK. They also have a 6-hourly auto-backup (part of the price) and I have had occasion to use this to restore files screwed up by clients. Very easy to locate backups and have them restore to the system. An excellent service and it provides great peace-of-mind.

If your site is still with GoDaddy, call up their tech support and ask for a performance profile analysis to find out why your site is slow. Their senior techs can do this quite easily.
