Customer Paid with Gift Certificate/Coupon - Not active

I have a customer that paid via "Payment Method: Gift Certificate/Coupon" but it is not on or active. Is there a glitch or other means to make this active?

I am having the same problem. I send out two GC's and both tried to redeem them and it didn't take the total off the order. Have you gotten any answers
