Add a store to an existing site?

OK, someone has to ask the dumbest question of the day. Here's my attempt:

Of course ZenCart can be used to build an entire website that is an ecommerce store, but can ZenCart be used on an existing site, sort of as a "module?"

Let's say I currently have a website, and I have decided to sell some products (add ecommerce functionality), but I want to keep the look and feel (CSS and general layout) of the original site. Is ZenCart a good fit for this purpose? I have seen some websites that have a completely different look and feel when the site visitor goes into the ecommerce portion of a site. I don't want that.

My questions:
1.) So, can ZenCart be used sort of like a "widget" or a "module", embedded on an existing (php) web page?
2.) If yes, is there a tutorial for how this is done?
3.) If no, do you have a suggestion for a different "drop-in" cart module?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Dennis

Re: Add a store to an existing site?

  1. No.
  2. No.
  3. No.

The best option is to use Zencart as your whole site. Once you grasp the basic architecture, Zencart is pretty easy to style, if you need to keep the look of your existing site. If you provide a link, we can offer opinions about how difficult it would be.

Second best would be to install Zencart in a subdirectory and style it to match your current site and link to it from there..

There may be a way to use Zencart as a back-end cart if you have a very small number of products, but sooner or later your visitors will need to see Zencart, so you'll still need to style it to match.

That's not a dumb question - it's asked all the time.

Re: Add a store to an existing site?

Thanks for the rapid reply, stevesh

"install Zencart in a subdirectory and style it to match your current site and link to it from there."
Is there a tutorial available for this (or is it just that having it in a subdirectory means it would not overwrite the existing index.php for the existing site, and thus no tutorial is necessary?) [It seems like the info I'm seeing is to use ZenCart as the entire site.]

To style the ZenCart pages to have at least a similar look and feel as the rest of the site, would it make more sense to try to find a theme that has generally similar css layout to the site, or would you just edit the default theme?

Thanks,

Dennis

Re: Add a store to an existing site?

That depends very much on what your current page layout looks like. If you let us see that, we can advise on the best way to proceed with Zen Cart styling.

Of course, even if the default "Classic" template is suitable as a base for your restyling, you should create a clone of it to do your custom work. There are tutorials on making a custom template in the FAQ/Tutorials section.

Re: Add a store to an existing site?

For my customers, I create a website like https://www.mysite.com and put their webpage files there (HTML, etc).

Then I create a sub directory called "store" below that. Then Zen-Cart is installed there.

On the home page and outside pages, I create a link called SHOP and point it to
http://mysite.com/store/index.php

If you want to test the cart and not have it available to the public until it is working, don't have any pointers from the existing website and just directly access Zen-cart by the direct URL I showed above.

The cart will be separate from the outside website, but you can find a template for the store that perhaps matches the color or styles and fits in. As you get experience, you can adjust colors of every meny and page in the cart itself, but it can get quite time consuming to do that.

Some sites load the cart in the root directory and don't have a website per se just the cart.

Some sites load the cart in a completely different place and use a subdomain name and load the cart somewhere else (even across the country) from where the website might be. An example might be http://store.mysite.com where "store" might be on a different server than "www".

Although
