Moving downloadable products to another subcategory

Hi,
I want to streamline my websites, I want to move download products from several sub-category's to other existing sub-category's in a different main category then delete the sub-category's and the main category that I've moved from. If I delete each attribute before I move the downloads and once moved attribute them with the same attributes as they had, once I've moved everything over if I delete the sub and main category's they came from will the downloads still work in their new place?

Why don't you just use the "move" feature and move the products to the new sub-category? Why delete anything?

I want to delete the original main & sub that I'm moving from but if I do that my products won't attribute properly will they? so I'm thinking if I delete
the attribute before I move a product then re-assign the attribute back to it in it's new position will it work?

I'm wanting to find the quickest, easiest way as there's quite a lot of products I want to move

Attributes are tied to a product, not a category.

So, if I have a product in a category of "Digital Downloads for Christmas" and I move it to another category of "Digital Downloads for Special Occasions", then the only thing I'm changing in the database is the fact that a certain category is assigned to the product. That doesn't change which attributes/downloads are also associated with that product.

Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're trying to do, I don't see why just moving it to another category would cause any problem. Once you've moved everything out of the old category, if you no longer intend to use that category, you can simply delete the old category.

Try "one" and see what happens. Or, if you're really timid, create a new product in one of your categories, add attributes and a download to it, and then move that product to another category. Watch for the end result you get. If it's what you're hoping for, great. If not, then you've not risked anything nor broken your store.

Thank you soooooooo much for your help :) I will try what you suggested, I think I got a bit jumpy because when I went to delete an empty sub I got this message

If the category contains no products, then any warnings related to products in that category don't apply at that particular moment.
