No indication of image src not found

I have a few images missing, and have just noticed on my new website build, whereas normally your get the blue box thingy don't you where its indicating there is an image that cant be located, i'm getting nothing.. so in fact on some pages if it wasnt that i knew there were supposed to be images there and i knew the html was looking for them I would have absolutely no idea!?

anyone come across this before? wondering if it might be something I have installed? maybe some javascript, maybe some css?

any ideas?

Re: No indication of image src not found

A link to the website would help, specifically an affected product, but yes an add-on could do that, try deliberately making a missing image for a product and see if it shows up the same way or whether a "blue box" appears,

Just to confirm, when you are saying missing image, are you meaning

  1. the product has an image assigned to it, but that image is missing and your browsers missing image icon isn't showing up, if so does the missing image icon show up on other sites that have missing images?
    or
  2. that the product has no image assigned to it, and zencarts standard no-image picture isn't showing up

No even if I hard code a call to an image that doesn't exist nothing shows.
I've removed all css and java for all addons and same thing happens. Pretty sure my other sites are not doing the same.

    correct.

After ideas what can cause this. I looked on the net and seen some js and jquery thy people use to hide it but I can see any references to any of this type of code.

Any ideas?

Only certain browsers do that. Others, like Firefox, display nothing.

And, for those that do show a placeholder, it doesn't put a placeholder when an image can't be located. It puts it when the URL to the image gets an error response, such as 404-not-found or 403-forbidden, etc.

Re: No indication of image src not found

Can't send a link as its a development site.

Just after ideas at this stage. It's not a massive problem I've just never noticed this before.

By not being able to locate would mean 404 not found surely?

Ill try some different browsers, am using Safari at present.

Well, even if you can't "post" the URL here, find out WHAT the URL is, and try to visit it. What happens?

... then it's not in the folder location specified.

So, you'll need to then backtrack to find out where that image reference is coming from (you haven't said whether it's a manufacturer image, a product image, a template image, whatever), and find out why it's telling it to use a non-existing name.

Not Found

The requested URL /images/43S.jpg was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I know that the reference is wrong. I can correct that and make the image show. The question is because I'm am trying to understand why I am not getting any placeholders for images that are incorrectly referenced/don't exist ..

Re: No indication of image src not found

Just noticed a difference between te live site and dev site.

If I go to an image file that doesn't exist on the dev site I get the white 404 error page

If I go to it on my Live site I get the zen cart page not found page

So is it to do with this part:

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
?

Do you think it need to have the zen cart 404 specified to handle it?

Re: No indication of image src not found

Um ... you're mixing things up.

If it's a PRODUCT image, then YOU need to fix the incorrect image filename specified IN YOUR PRODUCT DETAILS.
Period.

You said that a 404 on your live site takes you to your store's page_not_found page ... and that's simply because you've got it set up (appropriately) to ensure that visitors to your site who come in on a link that points to an invalid page (ie: basically anything other than index.php) get told that they've used an invalid link, and of course the page_not_found page shows them many other things they can choose from, instead of a blank "404 NOT FOUND" message which is entirely unfriendly.
The downside is that a broken-image URL (because you've told it the wrong image to use when entering your product data) may display differently such as perhaps the symptoms you are posting about.

So, really, the fix is to put correct image names in your products. THere's no use having invalid names for images anyway, right!

Re: No indication of image src not found

I think your missing my point.

If I were to create a blank html document and call it test.html and bung it in the root of my site then put
<img src="http://www.mysite.com/images/fake-image.jpg" />

Where fake-image.jpg doesn't actually exist

Then you visit /test.html

You will see a completely blank screen

I am trying to resolve this, not the fact some images are not showing.

I'm trying to understand why I am not getting a blue image placeholder nothing else.

I'm not sure I understand WHY you think that's something you need to spend any time on, when the real root issue is that you're using invalid image paths in your store.

But, I doubt you'll answer that question.

If you've got your .htaccess set up to handle 404 responses by redirecting to your Zen Cart's page-not-found page, instead of throwing a highly generic default 404 page, then that might explain the difference. And in that case, removing the custom 404 rule in your .htaccess would allow the placeholder to show again.
It'll make visitors to your site get very unfriendly completely useless blank pages when they encounter a problem though. That alone should be enough reason to not get sidetracked by this I-want-a-placeholder thing.

More important is understanding why you're outputting invalid image URLs to your browser in the first place, and fixing that problem instead.

Re: No indication of image src not found

I think it's important to know if elements on a page are returning 404 when trying to be retrieved, so if there is no place marker I would have no idea where this might be happening on any given page (other than obvious ones like product images).

I spend time ensuring I am happy how my websites react both when all is fine and also when problems occur.

I will try setting the custom error document in the htaccess and see if that resolves my issue.

Thanks for your time.

Re: No indication of image src not found

Using Firebug's "Inspect" feature in Firefox, or similar built-in feature of Chrome or Safari, you can see much more detailed information about all the resources being accessed by the page, with 404 problems clearly delineated.
