Can I include external data via ajax in my shopping cart page?

I have another database that bridges the zencart. I would like to create a ajax script that gets information about installments from the non-zencart database (localhost/php/program_installments.php). The product page has a js file in /product_info/jscript_main.php. Can I insert the ajax code into this js file to retrieve the data? How would I go about doing that?

Ajax is the wrong method (in my opinion)

in the product template hard-code a new db connection passing the products Model or ID in the query.

of course the private DB needs to have a reference to the product model or id
