Capture Order, Edit for Shipping THEN pay with Credit Card?

Hi All,

Have a situation where the client has a particular work flow that they don't want to change.

Basically, what I think I need for them is the ability to:

  1. Accept Order via shopping cart
  2. Allow Order to be Edited for quantities/availability (Edit Orders mod?)
  3. Edit Order ADD shipping cost (Edit Orders mod?)
  4. Allow customer to pay for the (now updated) order online with credit card.

They currently have an (ancient) Interchange system that's been modded to allow them to capture full card info (encrypted somehow), email that to them. Then they process the card info by hand. Doesn't sound PCI compliant to me...

Appreciate any advice/direction on this...

Ya, they'll have to write custom code to use #4 in that workflow, since Zen Cart is presently architected around paying for the order at the time of placing the order. Zen Cart isn't built to be merely a "charge my card this amount" system.

However, they could pre-authorize the card at checkout and then merely manually capture the correct amount after assessing the shipping/etc charges. But, as you say, that's a different workflow.

Yes, the per-authorize method may work but it has some caveats: 1) you can only authorize a certain amount and 2) debit cards don't like authorizations.

They do something like this at my day job. They'll take card info, add 200 for shipping, and then adjust the charge amount by with the correct calculated shipping cost. Creates havoc with debit cards and customer service is always being chided for not asking that question in advance.

Ihungil suggest this idea:

But the (very basic) steps and workflow for "quoted shipping" would be as follows:

Add a get quote shipping option for client to check out.
Add a get quote payment option (or capture payment via method supporting changing the payment amount).
Add an order status such as "payment needed".
Add a page to populate shipping data from the order into the session and redirect to checkout_payment.
Add a link from account history / order history to allow client to click a link to get to the page listed above.

Then in Edit Orders one can make changes and simply set the order status to "payment requested" to send an email notice to the client.

Would require some custom coding to achieve. Don't know if I have the skills for it...
