Failed AVS Check: 10505 - most of the time

Hi.. hope someone can help... :(
v150 - UK Zen Cart

I have taken over the running of a site (the original guy is no longer around) and one consistent problem the site owner faces is almost all credit card payments return a Failed AVS Check: 10505-This transaction cannot be processed.

I know this means that the 3D secure part could not match the the card details of the holder, but this has apparently happened so much with most CC transactions that I am being asked to fix it......... but i don't know how, or if I can. I have read on another cart's forum (via a Google search) to lower the PayPal settings, as if they are too high, even a typing of "king street" would fail if the cards address is "King Street"??? But I cannot find squat in the PayPal admin backend.

here is a copy and paste of the email

checkout.

Re: Failed AVS Check: 10505 - most of the time

May not have anything to do with 3D-Secure. That doesn't necessarily have anything to do with AVS "Address Verification Service".

But since PayPal can see the entire transaction, they'd be the best place to log a support ticket. www.paypal.com/mts

In the paypal account you need to go to "Fraud Management" in your account, and then "Edit your filter settings". You can then choose whether a partial AVS match is grounds for refusing payment.

Re: Failed AVS Check: 10505 - most of the time

Thanks Pickman, ATM the dude who owns the site has stopped accepting PayPal and is actively looking to try payment sense or cardsave [and even a new cart & and dev :(]. But I 'll look at your suggestion tomorrow and let you know if that helped... or if I have been fired

Re: Failed AVS Check: 10505 - most of the time

can someone please help me with this problem??

I set both PayPal Express and PayPal Pro to Debug mode to see if any logs were created over the weekend. Two logs were created but I do not understand what the content of both logs mean?

The site now gets no sales at all, the only indication that something is wrong is when a regular customer phones to place an order as they say cannot checkout/pay via the site. Please note, this is not my site. I am just trying (but failing) to help a friend.

Re: Failed AVS Check: 10505 - most of the time

This doesn't look at all like a 10505 error. Is it actually a different site? Or at least a different error email (didn't see you post any emailed error message).

You've posted logs from an Express Checkout transaction. The first was step 1 of 3. There is no evidence of step 2 or 3.
The other logs you posted were merely general debug info showing how ZC prepared the details to include in the CURL calls to PayPal.

There are 3 steps to checkout, and will be shown in 3 separate PayPal_CURL-xxxxxxx.log log files.
Step 1: SetExpressCheckout - which is done before redirecting the customer to the PayPal site
Step 2: GetExpressCheckoutDetails - which is done after the customer returns from PayPal's site (after logging in over there and selecting how they plan to pay later)
Step 3: DoExpressCheckoutTransaction - which is the final submission of the actual transaction to move money from the customer's account to the merchant's account.

Since yours isn't doing step 2, it means the customer never returned to your site from PayPal. That suggests that they ran into a problem on PayPal's end, and the problem is between the customer and PayPal, and not something to do with your store at all. Or the customer just plain aborted/abandoned the transaction by closing the browser.

Re: Failed AVS Check: 10505 - most of the time

Thank you Dr Byte for the detailed explanation. It is the same site that has many 10505 errors and one instance of a customer registering without completing a mandatory field (http://www.zen-cart.com/showthread.php?207962-Customer-registered-without-completing-company-filed).

The owner is fairly distraught over the whole matter as they went from good average of 40 sales a day for the past two years to get getting nothing but errors and now no sales the past few months. Their only source of orders now are their ebay, amazon and moto orders.

I have done a winmerge and there is next to no difference in the fileset from a back up taken when the site went live, consulted with their hosts and they say it is nothing at their end and even a telephone support call with paypal has not helped either. They say they have no problems at their end.

I have no idea how to help them.
