CKEditor does not work in my IE?

Everything works fine in Chrome and Firefox.
In IE --- When editing a product, the CKEditor box shows the icons (tools) but the rest of the box is just gray. No text, no white space for editing.
Similar problem in Define Pages Editor.

Any clues why CKEditor is not working in IE?

Re: CKEditor does not work in my IE?

  1. What version of Zencart
  2. What version of CKEditor have you installed
  3. What version of IE are you using?

Try going here

http://ckeditor.com/demo

This is the CKEditor demo page, does this work with your version of IE?

Do you and/or your client have a reason/need to use IE when editing? If not, then use Firefox (recommended for many reasons) and forget about the issues that MrGates has caused you with his various renditions of IE. :)

Why do you need clues... ? The reason it doesn't work is because it's got "Microsoft" in the title.

Re: CKEditor does not work in my IE?

Look, I understand those of you who despise MS and think we should just stop using their software. I try not to use it myself. But that is not a reason to make zero effort to get 3rd party software to work with it. There are many people who do not share your biases (or knowlege, if you prefer) and they use IE as their primary browser. I currently support such a person, who would like to edit their product information without switching browsers for that task. Since it is technically possible for CKEditor to work in IE, I see no reason why it should not, or why anyone would want to defend its problem areas.

I would be most grateful if anyone has any good answers to this issue.

Re: CKEditor does not work in my IE?

Nigelt74,

Thank you for your response.
I'm using IE 10. Zen 1.5.1, and I've uploaded the latest version of CKEditor from the Zen website.
The demo site works fine in IE, but the shopping cart still does not.

Why not go ask the good folks at microsoft? Afterall, it's THEIR crappy software that's not working.

Re: CKEditor does not work in my IE?

The solution may be simple:

  1. Download the latest ckeditor from ckeditor.com (standard package, which is the default on their main download button)
  2. Unzip
  3. This will give you a "ckeditor" folder.
  4. Delete the "samples" folder from it.
  5. On your server, rename your current /editors/ckeditor folder to ckeditorOLD
  6. Upload the new ckeditor folder from your PC to your server's /editors/ folder.
Now go to your store's admin and reload the page where the editor normally appears.

Then when you find it's working okay, delete your old ckeditorOLD folder.

Apologies, but I think you misunderstood the point, which was knowing that IE is notorious for compatibility issues, and that there are better alternatives, then why waste any time with it it all?

Furthermore, you've only stated it was an IE issue, but you neglected to mention which version (OK, you have now, IE10), but the chances are, your client probably didn't tell you which version they are using? (or did they). You could spend the next hour finding a 'fix' for IE10 only to find your client still has an issue with their IE7, so you'll spend another hour fixing that, and on and on it goes.

Don't get me wrong, Firefox, etc, etc aren't perfect either, but they have far less compatibility issues than the IE series of products.

I'd certainly spend the time ensuring the front end of the store is 'IE compatible', but I'd not waste any time worrying about the back end. That's just my personal view though, and it doesn't really have anything to do with Microsoft per se. I'm more concerned about you keeping your sanity :)

Cheers
Rod

Re: CKEditor does not work in my IE?

DrByte,

Thanks for your input. I uploaded the latest CKEditor as you suggested. We are making progress!

It works fine in Chrome. But IE has lots of problems. After clearing the browser cache and doing a reload, the new version editor now shows, and it contains the text correctly. However, it does not function correctly.
Compared to viewing the same page in Chrome, the IE version has most of the icons appear very pale instead of with the black text. Some of them are non-functional, such as 'paste', 'bold', 'italics'. When I try the "hyperlink" option, I get only part of the dialog box (title, OK, Cancel) but nothing in the box to create a link, and it is impossible to dismiss the box -- have to reload the page to get control back. Same thing happens with "Insert image".

Any ideas why would only some of the features work, some barely work, and some not at all?

Re: CKEditor does not work in my IE?

The Developer Console in IE is showing a lot of errors like:

SCRIPT5007: Unable to get property 'specified' of undefined or null reference
ckeditor.js, line 77 character 458

Re: CKEditor does not work in my IE?

Those are all issues with CKEditor itself. I suggest you take those questions to the CKEditor support site, since they're the experts on all of those pieces.

The only part affecting Zen Cart is how the Zen Cart integration simply tells CKEditor which fields to show the editor in. Everything else is up to CKEditor itself.

Re: CKEditor does not work in my IE?

I don't know. I don't have IE. I don't want to use IE. I have no need for IE.
And thus I can't test IE.

Maybe you have other incompatibilities because of jQuery or other javascript things?

Re: CKEditor does not work in my IE?

Dr.Byte,
Me too...Windows7Pro/IE10/Java:1.7.0_21
Dedicated Server: PHP 5.4.10
Zen Cart: v1.5.1 [2013-04-21 20:31:12
v3.7e - Updated CKEditor to v3.6.6. Compatible with ZC v1.3.9, v1.5.0, v1.5.1, v1.6.0

The "Plain Text" editor displays text.
CKEditor displays no text unless I click "Source" then I get plain text.
I did your fix to the latest CKEditor 4.1 and still get no working GUI box when in CKEditor.

Also, I upgraded Java last week, should I use the console and try to debug? Maybe there are variables in the upgrade that need flipped let me know. I want to help. - Mark

I spoke too soon, I reloaded my browser and now I get the same box with the same grayed out icons as dlt101.

Java has nothing whatsoever to do with this, Java is utterly different to javascript(which is what CKeditor uses a lot of) they are two completely different things, they should never have given them similar names. upgrading Java (a program provided by oracle to run Java applets and programs) will not have any effect on programs running javascript which are interpreted by the javascript engine built by your browsers maker in your case Microsoft,

Go to post number 4, does the sample version on the CKedito site run, what happens if you remove all the other jquery stuff, it could be a clash with something, how many other plugins or themes do you have on your site do any of them uses jquery etc
