Getting one product to appear in two categories AND setting up price deals

I'm sorry if this has been answered, but I searched the forum for a bunch of other questions I had and found answers, but I haven't found one addressing this, and I am sure the answer is simple!

I have a product that I want in two product categories. I know how to add the product to one category. And I know I could just add the product to the two categories by making a new product in each category, but is there an easy way to list the product once and then have it show up in two categories? Does this have something to do with the "Linked Product" setting? But, if so, how do I toggle that?

Also, can I set a price of $12 for an item but offer a deal of getting them for $10 each if the customer buys three or more items in that product category? Do I have to set that up with a coupon? How do I go about doing that in the easiest way possible?

Thanks, in advance!

In the admin product listing for a category, if you look at the icons on the right, the dark blue one with the 'C' is the one that allows you to copy or duplicate a product in another category.

Awesome! Thanks! When I click on that, I get an option....What is the difference between "Link product" versus "duplicate product?" I understand what "duplicate product" would mean but what does "linking" the product do?

Re: Getting one product to appear in two categories AND setting up price deals

A Linked Product is 1 Product that is "Linked" to multiple categories ... so that a change to the product in 1 or more categories will change the "same" product ...

A "Duplicate" Product is a copy of 1 Product to another, separate Product, making an additional Product with all the settings of the first Product until it is edited and/or customized ...

Re: Getting one product to appear in two categories AND setting up price deals

Thank you both! Very helpful!

Now does anyone know the answer to my second question in this thread....

"Can I set a price of $12 for an item but offer a deal of getting them for $10 each if the customer buys three or more items in that product category? Do I have to set that up with a coupon? How do I go about doing that in the easiest way possible?"

There's this:

http://www.zen-cart.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=135

I haven't used it, but it's by swguy, so it'll work as advertised.

For simple quantity discounts, that is built in.
Go to Catalog > Products Price Manager, select the category and product, click "edit", find the "add blank discounts" button and add your desired quantity discounts.

Glenn - Built in Quantity Discounts won't work in this case because the OP wants to go across the category. @stevesh is correct- my Quantity Discounts module is what you want.

Ah, I misread it. He was talking all about one product, then wanted to do quantity discounts on a possible mix of products.

Re: Getting one product to appear in two categories AND setting up price deals

SWGuy--Okay, I installed it. Is there a way for it to just apply to one category, though? For example, if I have a pet store, and if I have product categories of Dog Items, Cat Items, and Fish Items but I only want the quantity discount to apply to all items in "Dog Items" but not in "Cat" and "Fish" Items, can I specify that the discount is only applied to ONE category?

And thank you all for all the help! :-)

Re: Getting one product to appear in two categories AND setting up price deals

Yes. There is a user exit called "exclude_category" and you can exclude everything except the category you wish to discount. If you look at the help on my home page there are a couple of code samples that demonstrate this (if it's not obvious).

Thank you! I will look at this tomorrow. I think I can figure it out. :-)
