DB write randomly fails: how to catch it?
Hi,
I am trying to track down an issue that has been popping up randomly in the last few months and I don't know exactly where to look at.
Basically, what happens is the following:
- customer adds stuff to the shopping cart
- customer goes through the checkout process
- customer pays through paypal
- paypal payment ends successfully, but order details are lost in the process
- shop owner receives the paypal payment notification, but the notification does not contain the zenid and the order does not appear in the orders section.
The shop has a really low order rate (I'd say around 10 per month...) and this issue has popped up 3 or 4 times until now since november 2012. I suspect that for some reason the database write fails (but reads always succeed...maybe due to some kind of MySQL clustering/caching issue? I am not proficient with the LAMP stack, but I have seen something similar happening in Oracle environments), but I am not able to pinpoint it exactly to tell the hosting provider that it's their fault and not mine. Being a recent issue, I wouldn't blame ZC in the first place, unless there are known version issues between my version of ZC and the environment it lives in.
Other useful infos: the shop has gone live in may 2009. Since then, there has been no hosting changes, nor other disrupting changes I am aware of. PHP version is 5.3.21 (I know it's been upgraded in may 2011 and I remember having applied some kind of patch accordingly), MySQL is 5.1.61-0+squeeze1.
What I would need is some kind of logging to check if and when DB write fails (i had a look at the debug error logging utility, but don't know if it's appropriate and really how much it logs).
Any other suggestions that could lead me in the right direction are welcome.
Please tell me if you need any other details.
thanks in advance
