The only 'safe' way that I'm aware of is to manually remove them one by one.

It IS possible to create a script that will delete them and update all the their table relationships automatically, but it isn't going to be a simple 'one line of code'.

Whether you opt to do it manually, or create a script to do it, will depend very much on the amount of data involved. Manual deletions take a few seconds each. It could take a couple of hours to create a suitable script (which will ultimately remove them in a matter of seconds). You have to make the determination which is going to be the quickest and easest for your particular store.
