Setting up Single/Case price via Attributes.

I'm setting up a new ZenCart store (fresh 1.5.1 install, not an upgrade), and I need to be able to sell either by individual items or cases of those same items. I've been reading through the forums here for a few days, but can't seem to find the right scrap of info I'm missing to get this to work how I need. Regular quantity pricing will get me almost the result I'm looking for, but not quite. It would be far preferable to have Individual & Case as two radio-button options. I was hoping someone with more practice at this than me might be able to point me in the right direction.

Each item in the store will have two separate prices, Individual price is one number, case price is a completely different number. I've currently got the main price for my test item set to 0, and prices set as attributes. The case size will also vary by item. Once I get one example to work right, the varying case sizes should be easy (perhaps tedious, but easy) to set up using a series of slightly different attributes created for each potential case size, and just assigning one to each product in addition to the default single-item option. The single price works fine by default, of course. So far, so good. I can add either one to my cart, and it adds a single item at the listed price, takes one out of inventory.

Here's an example, using a test product:

Attachment 12581

This is basically how I want my product to appear to the customer, but I can't quite get it to function how I want.

I need that second option to do three things:

  • Showing the case pricing as a per-unit price. (as it does currently)
  • Adding the proper quantity of that item to the cart. (ex: 1 case added = $110.00 in the cart)
  • Subtracting the proper quantity of that item from store inventory. (ex: 1 case added = 2 units removed from inventory)

And that is where I keep going in circles. I've gotten it to do one or two of these things at a time, but not all three for some reason. I hope it's possible, and if anyone could give me a bit of advice on how to set up the correct attributes to get this effect, I'd be quite grateful.

Pricing by attributes is the way you want to do this, but it isn't clear why you don't just make the 'case of 2' price $110. Attributes are generally variations of a single product rather than quantities, so stock reductions wouldn't work the way you want them to, even using the Stock By Attributes mod.

If I understand, I wouldn't use attributes at all - just make the single case the product and use the Quantity Discount mod for the multiples.

Re: Setting up Single/Case price via Attributes.

There's two reasons I want the case price to show per-unit instead of the full price of the case. One, since this is wholesale, it gives a clearer idea of how much a customer would be saving by buying in bulk. I think seeing $50 vs $30 makes a bigger impression to resellers than seeing $50 for one vs $3000 for a 100-pack, since their immediate concern is how much they can make on each unit. The second, and more important reason, is that this store is being built as a replacement for an older one, and that's how it was shown in the old store. You know how much some people hate change.

I was avoiding standard quantity discounts because we want to sell full cases for the discounts. If the item comes in a case of 150 units, we want them to have to buy 150, 300, 450 (etc.) units to get the discount. With a regular quantity discount, If they bought 299 of an item, they'd be getting the case price on a one full case (as intended) and also on 149 loose items (not what we want). At the same time, I want it to update the stock accurately. If the Quantity Discounts mod would allow for that, then I might give it a try, but I haven't tried it out yet.

Again, this is largely because it's how the company has always done business. I was hoping to not have to talk them into changing that.

If the product comes in a case of 150 units, it would be unusual that customers would be able to buy 34 units, rather than round case lots, especially wholesale. If they have to buy whole cases, then a case of 150 would be '1' unit in Zencart, and the discounts would apply as you want them to. You could include the arithmetic (how much per case in each quantity) in the product description. A link to the current site might help us see what you're dealing with now.

Unusual, maybe. But that's how it's always worked, so I can't take the option away now, or there will be customers annoyed by the change. After a bit more tinkering, I've just returned to my original plan of using the standard quantity discounts. Thanks for your help.

As for a link, the (unfinished) store's URL is: http://www. i o t c u s a .net

(I'm aware there's a few places where it says .com on the page instead of .net. That'll be resolved by the end)
