matching image size to box size so that image doesn't tile

I'm hoping there's a concise answer to this question. What's the procedure for matching an image size (pixels as measured in Photoshop, 72 ppi) to a box size -header, body, etc.- so that the image precisely fills the box and doesn't tile? Question for anyone out'n'about tonight.

For background images,

background-size: 100% 100%;

will do what you are asking for, in all modern browsers. IE8 and older will not process this.
