Categories box - moving it and adding 2nd layer categories to the list

I have a categories box setup on the left but it's showing way too high up. There was 2 images before in that area but I removed them now the category box shows up too high. How can I move this down so it's below the banner?

I have set it up in my admin so that I have 5 main categories and then they each have sub-categories below them then the products. On the left hand side categories column I want the 2nd level sub categories to show up and not the top level categories since I already have the top nav menu showing the top level categories. Is there a way to get the 2nd level sub-categories to show up in this area without going into products/categories and getting rid of my top level categories and replacing them with all the subcategories. I hope that made sense.

For your category level display, Categories Dressing from Plugins (with the included chcategories option) can be set to show as you ask. Its readme has more information, and the support thread has much more. I am about to leave on business for two weeks and will be offline for the duration.
