can't see product descriptions in admin after upgrade.....

upgrade from 1.39h to 1.51, in a test site location (bug iron out ect..)
when viewing the test site as a customer, I can see everything I need: products, complete descriptions, attributes, images, the works, however... when I went to update a product I found i could not see the description in the product edit page. it is their in the preview, on the customer side, in mysql, just not showing up in the admin edit page? any clues anyone? is this a utf-8 / latin-1 problem? or is it something more serious?
