Is the Newsletter Subscribe module now built in? The one from the plugin section seems outdated and can't be used for v1.5.1.

Unfortunately, no, it's not built in. The existing code makes ***extensive ***use of core-file overwrites which is one of the reasons that it's not usable for v1.5.1.

For signups, it's probably more efficient to use the Mailchimp sidebox plugin instead, and let Mailchimp handle your newsletter stuff.
You can feed Mailchimp from your store's existing data by using something like the Email Address Exporter plugin.
