Collecting only localstate sales tax?

I only want to collect tax for my local state(since its an internet purchase and only requires tax collection if I have presence in the physical state). How can I set this? When I try to set it up, it starts collecting the same tax rate for EVERY state

This only defines how to get the same sales tax for ALL of the US. I only want to charge tax for one state(the state the business is located in)

The FAQ quite clearly describes how to set up taxes for one state. The example is Colorado, but the process would be the same for your state.

Followed the faq, but users from a different state are seeing the same tax rate...

I just set up taxes for my state only on a test site, following the FAQ I referenced, and it works just as it's supposed to. I'd suggest starting over, deleting any existing Zone Definitions and following the FAQ steps exactly.

I did this at http://topshot-ne.com/zencart/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1 and set it up so the only country is US, added all 50 states, and the only zone that is defined is MA which has a 6.25 sales tax. Regardless of which state I list as the shipping or billing address, I always get charged 6.25% sales tax. People who don't live in the state the business is located in(MA) shouldn't be getting charged sales tax. what am I doing wrong? Or do I need to define sales tax as 0 for every state other then MA(and define zones for each state etc)

The only zones that you have to set up are (is) those where you want to charge sales tax. You've done something wrong.

In Admin - Locations / Taxes - Zone Definitions you should only see a zone for Massachusetts. If you highlight that and click on Tax Rates, you should see the rate in the table.

If you click on Admin - Locations / Taxes - Tax Classes you should see one class - Taxable Goods (unless you changed the name).

If you click on Admin - Locations / Taxes - Tax rates, you should see one line (Taxable Goods) and the table containing (from left to right) Priority - Tax Class (Taxable Goods) - Zone (Massachusetts) - Tax Rate (6.25%) - Description (whatever you named the tax in Tax Rates).

That is exactly my setup....

Hate to sound like a broken record, but my suggestion is to start over, removing all Zone Definitions and Tax Classes and Tax Rates and work through the tutorial again step-by-step. As I mentioned, that's what I did on my test site and things work as they should.

I already sorta did start over...I deleted everything under the Locations/Taxes section and rebuilt it....

In your Zen Cart Admin in the Configuration ... My Store ... What is your settings for:

Display Prices with Tax
Display prices with tax included (true) or add the tax at the end (false)

On what basis is Product Tax calculated. Options are
Shipping - Based on customers Shipping Address
Billing Based on customers Billing address
Store - Based on Store address if Billing/Shipping Zone equals Store zone

I am unsure what you mean by the second part...

Go to your Locations / Taxes ... Zones Definitions ... and click on your Zone Definition for your Taxes and click on the button for DETAILS ...

The only zone I have defined in Zones Definiations page is MA.
