duplicate shop but both use same database

I need to duplicate my shop onto a subdomain and have both shops running under different names but using the same database / stock items. Can I just copy the shop to the subdomain?

If you are duplicating for wholesale/retail or customer pricing differences, why not use a mod (look at pricing tools for options) to handle that rather than subject yourself to the problems involved with using a single DB for two sites.
