Main page Product list renders downward rather than left-to-right

Over the past month I have begun admin work on metalboatsociety.com/ZenCart/ with some earlier admins not being available. While working on a to-do task list focused on the main page, the Product list has changed rendering from 3-across the center column to downward on the left side. Over the past two days I find no reason for the unusual rendering, and searching this forum has yeilded no ready answer.

What I have done is to remove the "New Product" listing, and remove considerable duplication in the Admin: Configuration ==> Index Listing table, thus no New, Featured, Special, nor Upcoming, listings are produced. I also deleted four modules from the list that were labled as missing.

In my attempts to isolate the cause, I removed all css. The results produced a pretty rough main page but the 3-accross table remained rendered as a single column. In reading the HTML from ZenCart at the browser I find no answer for the effect, it is clearly intended to create a table display. Thus I wonder if anyone else has seen this effect?

If this effect turns out to be a bug rather than a configuration glitch [or fat-finger mess], then I owe considerably more install detail. I pray the answer is a quite simple oversight on my part.

Check the following admin settings
Configuration >> Index Listing >>

  • New Products Columns per Row
  • Featured Products Columns per Row
  • Special Products Columns per Row

Configuration >> Product Listing >>

  • Product Listing - Layout Style
  • Product Listing - Columns Per Row

What I have done is to remove the "New Product" listing, and remove considerable duplication in the Admin: Configuration ==> Index Listing table, thus no New, Featured, Special, nor Upcoming, listings are produced. I also deleted four modules from the list that were labled as missing.
"Remove"? How? Turn off in the admin? Or actually removed core files?
For the record Zen Cart 1.5.X has the rel="canonical" and these are in fact no way duplication.

Deleted 4 module how and from what list?

In my attempts to isolate the cause, I removed all css. The results produced a pretty rough main page but the 3-accross table remained rendered as a single column. In reading the HTML from ZenCart at the browser I find no answer for the effect, it is clearly intended to create a table display. Thus I wonder if anyone else has seen this effect?
Only in broken or mis-configured websites

If this effect turns out to be a bug rather than a configuration glitch [or fat-finger mess], then I owe considerably more install detail. I pray the answer is a quite simple oversight on my part.
Guarantee it's not a bug, simple maybe or not depending on your answers above... but not a bug at all.

Re: Main page Product list renders downward rather than left-to-right

You changed #logo, .centerBoxContents, .specialsListBoxContents, .categoryListBoxContents, .centerBoxContentsAlsoPurch, .attribImg {
float: left;
margin-left: 5%;
}

to float:none;, which caused the problem. If you need the other elements not to float, separate them into their own rules.

Re: Main page Product list renders downward rather than left-to-right

Configuration >> Index Listing: All call for 3 columns
On this same window, all else is 0 And setting these to zero is how I removed the New Product report that showed, no core file removal for me...

Configuration >> Product Listing: No such table entries, such titles would be too easy? I also did not find these settings by opening entries that seem related.

Deleted 4 line entries from Tools >> Layout Boxes Controller: Four lines displayed with red background highlight, for example -- sideboxes/tell-a-friend.php. They were labled as "missing". My interpretation is that the ...php module had been deprecated or dropped in some upgrade of the past. Thus I took the opportunity to click on "remove". I'm sorry for my oblique remove comment, it is ambiguous.

Yes due to mis-configuration I hope

Re: Main page Product list renders downward rather than left-to-right

Interesting Stevesh...

The css entry you flag could make sense to cause the effect
BUT
the css entry already specifies "float: none;".
And syntax of the whole statement looks good.
And firefox "inspect element" shows "float: none;

Did you visit and see the "float: left;" entry somewhere?

You highlight also margin: 5%; that combined with three <div @ 33% only leaves 1% for any margining. Pretty tight?
But still the 3-up used to work so I need to continue looking...

Re: Main page Product list renders downward rather than left-to-right

As stevesh said, find in styles_mbs.css ```
#logo, .centerBoxContents, .specialsListBoxContents, .categoryListBoxContents, .centerBoxContentsAlsoPurch, .attribImg {
float: none left;
margin-left: 5%;
}

You would not have the
Configuration >> Product Listing >>
- Product Listing - Layout Style
- Product Listing - Columns Per Row
unless you or your template had installed the Column Layout Grid mod which you do not appear to have, so don't worry about that.

Re: Main page Product list renders downward rather than left-to-right

No, I meant that it should be float:left; (and is in the stock Zencart template stylesheet) and you (or someone) had changed it to float:none;.

Re: Main page Product list renders downward rather than left-to-right

I missed your post that came in a few seconds before mine. Fortunately Steve covered it.
Inspection with Firebug showed that the margin: 5%; is nullified by another stylesheet rule, so is not a problem. In any case, the "5%" in this situation would be 5% of the individual element width, not 5% of the whole container width.

No, I meant that it should be ...

I owe you an appology. There is no ego involved, so whoever inserted "none" is a non-issue. The issue is that I interpreted your note in exact reverse of your intent. Upon re-reading it -- you gave the solution first time. My faux pau.

I now remember repairing a css syntax error from years ago at this spot. I had not understood the consequence until now.

SO back in business again.
Thanks for your perseverience in the face of misunderstanding.
