Free Shipping for particular product if total order above X value

We have a particular product which is very light in weight.

We do not want to charge shipping for this product if customer's order total is above X value.

Is there anything in-built we can use to manage this ?

What shipping module(s) are you currently using?

Could you post your settings that are in the right hand panel for Zone Rates zones and Table Rate table shipping modules?

Re: Free Shipping for particular product if total order above X value

So you're basing your shipping on weight in the Zone Rate zones and Table Rate table shipping modules ...

What is the Product weight on the Product that you want to offer free shipping on orders over X amount and what is X?

Yes, we base our shipping on weight.

The product in question is about 100 to 150 grams. (0.220462 to 0.330693 lbs)

Re: Free Shipping for particular product if total order above X value

What is the Order Total where this Product should have free shipping?

Is the Order Total related to the quantity of these light weight Product that get purchased?

Re: Free Shipping for particular product if total order above X value

Order Total above $200 should make shipping for these products free.

The order total is not related to any quantity of these light weight products.

The order total of $200 can include any product for which we charge shipping (Excludes gift certificates etc)

Re: Free Shipping for particular product if total order above X value

From what I can see of your Zone and Table rates, it looks like you charge at around a lb or more the first setting ...

If you only consider this one light weight Product, if that is the only Product in the cart then you want your minimum shipping rate charged, correct?

But if it is in the cart with other Products, because of its light weight, it sounds like its weight would not have a big affect on the shipping charge, correct?

So if that low weight Product only had its weight added when it is the only Product in the cart, could its weight be totally removed when other Products are in the cart?

This would mean if 1-100+ of this light weight Product is in the cart, its weight would have zero affect on the shipping cost, but if it were the only Product in the cart, then its weight would be the qty x its weight and use your regular Zone or Table rates ...

Would that work for you?

The above is correct

The 2nd case would be if order is above $200, the shipping for this product is free.

These are the only 2 cases I would like to use, any way to do this ?

Re: Free Shipping for particular product if total order above X value

You could try customizing the shipping class file:
/includes/classes/shipping.php

with the code in RED:

  function calculate_boxes_weight_and_tare() {
    global $total_weight, $shipping_weight, $shipping_quoted, $shipping_num_boxes;

// bof: reduce weight on cart over $200 by products_weight for products_id 321
$over_total = 200;
$chk_products_id = 321;
$chk_total = $_SESSION['cart']->show_total() - $_SESSION['cart']->free_shipping_prices();
if ($chk_total > $over_total && $_SESSION['cart']->in_cart($chk_products_id)) {
  $chk_qty = $_SESSION['cart']->get_quantity($chk_products_id);
  $chk_weight = zen_products_lookup($chk_products_id, 'products_weight');
  $total_weight = $total_weight - ($chk_qty * $chk_weight);
}
// eof: reduce weight on cart over $200 by products_weight for products_id 321

    if (is_array($this->modules)) {

where you set the amount that you want the order over for 200 to your amount:
$over_total = 200;

and the products_id for the light weight product for 321 to your products_id:
$chk_products_id = 321;

See if that accomplishes what you are looking for ...

NOTE: there is no overrides file for the shipping.php class, to save a backup of the original and a copy of your changes for future updates ...
