Please help! I've lost my connection to my database

After uploading a new template (Dover) all hell broke loose on my site. I have followed the log info and finally have gotten myself to this point and I can't figure it out. Isn't there some tool to use to help correct problems?

Yes and I didn't receive any response to my last post ... I'm desperate.

The message I see when I go to your site says Zencart can't access the database. This almost always means the database name, and/or user name and/or password in the configure.php file is/are wrong, so triple-check those.

Thank you, I will try again. I have done this 3x's already but I think this time I'll try it on a MAC instead of a lower end laptop. That might be the problem ... at this point I will try anything.

Shouldn't make a difference. Check to make sure those files are writable, or your changes won't 'take'.

The writeable was a good thought as they were locked files so I unlocked them and uploaded new ones but still nothing. It's almost funny as if I'm not meant to do this still but that's just the frustration talking.

The problem started when I switched my template choice to Dover Fine ... since then I haven't been able to get into the admin to switch the switch off that template choice. Could that be the hangup? Is there a file with that info or it's only in the admin panel?

I have done everything suggested and still no connection. Could it be on my server's end?

Is this correct? No pathway defined. This from the admin/includes config

Do you have a backup of your file system and database PRIOR to installing the new template?

If so, do a full rollback and see if things get back to where they were BEFORE you installed that new template.

I rechecked all the files by comparing them to a new download of ZC and moved things around that got screwy with the new template but still no connection and everything in the config file is correct. I am lost as to why things aren't working. Is there a flow chart of how the system works? It seems there is a disconnection (obviously) in the pathway but I'm not sure which file starts the flow. Gosh I even tried re-installing the cart in a new folder and tried to connect it to the database but no products were added in.

My server reverted my site to a time before installing Dover and now my site is back BUT I can't get into the Admin panel to do anything :-(

I think I will wait until the morning to see if it was just a cache flushing issue or something else waiting to be refreshed. But YEAH my site is almost back to normal.

Well .... spoke too soon.

Now I am locked out of the admin login even after following Dr. Byte's instructions in the archives on how to reset your admin name.

Is it that 1.51 is a bit touchy or that responsive design needs to be installed FIRST? Or is it the nature of the beast called the internet?

Can I get some direction into how to fix this mess I'm in Ollie?

Sometimes it is easier to bite the bullet and start over from scratch or from a backup made just prior to starting an upgrade. (BOTH database and files) That way, you have a functional, known condition to reference.

This is a fresh installation not an upgrade. I couldn't figure out how to do upgrade on my old server as they put me on a server with php5.5 with my old zencart 1.38a - which broke it. I finally did a fresh install and repopulated a new database one by one, stupid yes but with the rotten instructions out there for idiots like myself who need pictures in order to figure things out I was unable to successfully upload my old database into the new install.

I'm so close now, don't want to give up as you suggested. I am determined to get back what was mine before I tried to install a responsive design template.

The main question now is HOW DO I TELL THE CART THE NAME OF MY ADMIN FILE?

I'm sorry. Should have kept my mouth shut. I've just been following the few threads about your troubles. You've changed so many files, folders and paths, it is hard to see it as a fresh install. Seeing you editing this file, that file, deleting a file, adding a folder, changing paths, blaming a template for crashing the installation, etc. It just sounded like you didn't have a functioning, default v1.5.1 install with demo data before starting on an upgrade. Now, it sounds like you created database tables one at a time instead of just importing a backup file which contained the entire database.

I was just suggesting getting back to a basic functional installation. I'm in the process of upgrading and have restored backups of the files and database several times when things didn't appear to play nice or me fat-fingering something.

For me, getting the responsive template tweaked to my liking was most important, so I made that my first priority after making sure the default v1.5.1 installation was working as expected.

When your host restores a webserver backup, are they also restoring a db backup from the same point in time?

Everything was a-ok before installing the responsive design template and then turning it on in the admin control panel ... that's when everything broke. That's why i blame the template as I know the process of allowing it control I lost control, why I don't know. It could be even solar flares affecting the internet's process of transferring files all I know is that it broke.

I'll figure it out, not stupid just wanted a fresh pair of eyes to help.

Between you and the FAQ's I have had a fun time learning all about configure files, how they should look, how 1.51 is different from 1.38a in that the admin pathway is NOT clearly defined in the coding of the configure files, it's defined elsewhere I haven't a clue. That's where I'm stuck at right now. If it seems like I have danced around it's because that is what everyone on the forum said to do.

The difference between the admin configure.php files in 1.3.X and 1.5.X is that the new admin folder name does not need to be hard-coded into the file in 1.5.X. It is coded to retrieve that folder name automatically, in this line: define('DIR_WS_ADMIN', preg_replace('#^' . str_replace('-', '-', $p1) . '#', '', dirname($_SERVER['SCRIPT_NAME'])) . '/');

I've been trying to follow your thread, but two things come to mind:

1. Unless the new template files included one or both configure.php files (no template ever would/should), it's almost impossible that the template has caused your problem, despite the apparent timing.

2. What do you mean by 'locked out of admin'? Is it telling you your password is wrong, or ?
