Pre-Select A Payment Option at check-out

Iv'e seen a bunch of closed threads about this like this:

However none of the solutions worked for me.

I'm running 1.5.0
No payment option sort order is 0
I'm using Virtual Merchant payment module with sort order set to 1 and would like the radio button to be preselected to avoid the popup "please choose a payment method for your order

Ok so this solution worked for selecting the payment method as default but if the customer select a different method than decides to go back typing the cc number will not auto select the radio button

I realize you have tried to get help on this subject, and not saying that I could have fixed it for you. I was curious what the solution ended up being at least for the initial assignment of the default payment option. Above says "this solution" but never identified what it was. :) think you could spare posting it?

I'm sorry, I thought this might have been posted to the wrong thread, but now am wondering are you asking how to autoselect the option if the customer comes back to the payment screen to modify something about what was on the screen?

Ie. They begin shopping, add items to cart, begin checkout process, when they first get to the payment options area, you've applied the change in the associated thread to establish your payment option as the default because no previous payment option was chosen. They move on, but for some reason return and currently no payment option is defaulted as selected? As a result you would like whatever was previously selected the first time around to be selected again when they return to this screen? Is that correct?

I was referring to for ex. they give a click on the paypal icon but then they decide to do credit card, they type in the cc info click next but are taken to paypal.....

Ahh, that I believe is a javascript function using the onchange event of the cc text box. So that would then select the associated payment option. I assume that you are not using paypal express or if you are, that it doesn't go straight to paypal from the shopping cart page?
