Going in Circles with DP Patch / Admin password problem

I'm having a terrible time with the upgrade to v153 and I need some help. I was running fine on v151 but had so many issues with the upgrade that I ditched everything and started over using my backups.

I'm using the latest 1.5.3 download and the patch Dr. Byte provided (the general.php file). If I have the zc_install folder in place, I get this error: "Warning: You cannot access the admin until you have deleted the zc_install folder."

Now my site and database are back, but I'm having two issues I can't resolve:

  1. The site shows that "Your database appears to need patching to a higher level. See Admin->Tools->Server Information to review patch levels." BUT, I can't get into my Admin because...

  2. When I try to login to the admin section, even after resetting my password, it returns me to the blank login page, or gives me an message "There was a security error..."

What to do?

  1. Put zc_install on the server. Patch it if needed.
  2. Then actually run zc_install and choose "Database Upgrade" so that it can upgrade the database. (If it doesn't give you an upgrade option then you probably didn't properly import the data from your live site for this temporary testing environment.)
  3. Then you can remove the zc_install directory
  4. Then when you log into your Admin it won't give you the message to remove zc_install
  5. And since you've upgraded the database it won't tell you that it still needs upgrading.

Thanks for your response. I've been through those steps several times, with no luck. I'm still stuck on the two items I listed.

Right now I have ZC_install on the server. I can get to the database patch, then it hangs at zc_install/index.php?main_page=database_upgrade with just a blank page.

I'm also getting CURL errors, although I know it's set up on my server:

CURL problems detected: 28 => Connection timed out after 11000 milliseconds more info...
CURL requires SSL support. Please notify webmaster or hosting company. 28 => Connection timed out after 11000 milliseconds more info.

If I go back to run the zc_install again, it also tells me that "store configure.php is not writeable" even after I change permissions to 777.

My site has been down for 3 weeks now and I'm at a total loss for what to do to make this work.
