Customer Payment Verification

Has anyone seen or created a mod like this?

New Customer places a "large" order (but it could be fraud)
The payment method, processes or pre-authorizes a slightly smaller amount
eg: Order is $1000.00 We process for say $999.87

Customer is asked to verify what we have charged their card.

If the customer emails the correct amount then we know that they have access to that card and order proceeds to completion.

If the customer cannot email the correct amount then they don't have access to that card and it is a fraudulent transaction. Order Cancelled.

Any suggestions?

What payment method are you using?I didn't have a specific method in mind.
I hoped if I saw an example somewhere I could adapt it.
I don't think I could use any that went offsite to process (like paypal express) the transaction as the customer would be able to see the modified amount there before paying. That would defeat the purpose.
It would have to be an on site payment method where I could alter the amount in the background before sending it off to the processor.
