Can product sort order be manipulated beyond whole digits

I am trying to have the top 50 items of 250 show up on the first 2 pages of 5 pages - focusing on title naming by product name first (common to all 250 products for Meta keyword search advantage) then some description within the title and using sort order which is alpha/numeric is not achieving the desired effect - i.e. the 'alpha' component is negated and it is not practical to use sort order 1-250 as new products are continually being added and others dropping off.

I also have these products in a shop in Etsy which allows changes in order of presentation on the page(s) simply by click and drag and also send to x page. This allows me to arrange the pages, especially the first two pages to be as inviting as possible.

Google analytics shows a significant drop of of through traffic after page 2 on my ZC site(s) but not to the same degree on Etsy.

I have tried using negative numbers -1, -2 etc in sort order and that works in placing a few individual products up front but presents the same potential problem of individually sort order numbering every product.

Is there any other way to achieve placing individual products where I want them (as in the Etsy example above) ??

That could be done, however you would need to modify the catalog/YOUR_ADMIN/products.php perhaps you could make that feature request for ZenCart 1.6 or 2.0.

Would it help to update the products_sort_order to higher values with something like:

UPDATE products SET products_sort_order = products_sort_order * 1000;

Linda - the same problem would exist I feel, having to continually change sort order on product pages. Ideally the image layout program used by Etsy would be the ultimate answer - shop owner simply selects 'arrange shop' and then click and drag - very smick indeed. 

Maybe there is a commercially available program already out there? Anybody know of one? Who are the image program Guru's in here? :smile:
