Database question! Can I use my old one? v1.3.7 to 1.3.5

Hello all, I recently was hacked, we had been on v1.3.7 for
years. I downloaded the latest version 1.5.3 and then I
uploaded it to an embedded directory just to get started. I host on godaddy. In doing so I created a new database just to play with it a bit. So now I wanted to hook the old database up since I have over 2500 products online. But when I edited the config files to use the old database it gives me an error and says it needs an upgrade? How do I attach the old database

Upload the zc_install directory again, and perform a database only upgrade... Remove the zc_install directory and done..

Of course, one of the questions would be how was the site hacked and is there anything in the database that permitted it... (Not exactly likely, but...)

OK thank you so much, I was leaning towards that route lol! No I believe it was a different issue in the code of the old version is how we were hacked!
